Lanae Tipton is a 24-year-old writer, journalist and proud mother of one. She has been incarcerated in Texas since she was 18 years old. Her work has been featured in Prism, Scalawag, The Appeal, The Barbed Wire, Black Lipstick, and Carefree Magazine.
Lanae has been housed in solitary confinement for over two years. She writes about her experiences in Ending Isolation: The Case Against Solitary Confinement by Christopher Blackwell and Deborah Zalesne, with Kwaneta Harris and Terry Kupers, published in September 2025:
A day-to-day routine here in “ad-seg” in simplest terms is stressful. When you are caged up like this at all times, day in and day out, it takes a toll on your mental state. There are hardly any visual changes or distractions in ad-seg and it ultimately leaves you with nothing but your own racing mind and the same four walls that tend to mock you.
We connected Lanae to Inmate Tea with A&P to speak more about the realities of solitary confinement in Texas prisons. In this new episode, Lanae and Pig discuss their experiences in the carceral system and how they survive the day-to-day. They also shine a critical light on the prevalence of sexual harassment and abuse within women’s and men’s facilities.
Hear Lanae share her story, the struggles she and other women face in Texas prison, and the work that keeps her going:
